Nasher Museum of Art
Duke University, Durham, North Carolina
Located topographically atop a wooded knoll, the museum, with
its crowning multi-faceted glass and steel roof, creates a new landmark
for Duke University. Designed by world-acclaimed architect Raphael Vinoly,
the museum stands as a building-in-a-clearing with sweeping walkways
and vehicular approaches located to maximize the visitors appreciation
of the buildings sculptural form. Drifts of ornamental grasses
define clearings carved out of the woods for outdoor events and a series
of mulched woodland walkways reveals the episodic placement of outdoor
sculpture.
