As winners of a design competition to replace a reflecting pool originally designed in the early 1970’s by master architect Paul Rudolf, our firm approached the new design with similar simplicity. The new forecourt to the Elion Hitchings Building improves wayfinding for visitors and creates a more interactive entry sequence. Bridge-like walkways divide the space into a series of faceted lawn panels edged by low concrete walls that diminish in height in dialogue with the tilted planes of grass. A linear promenade and bosque of trees incorporates seating and overlooks the court.

LORD CORPORATE HEADQUARTERS
Cary, North Carolina

Building and site merge in the design of this corporate headquarters, with the building’s geometry creating cues for the arrangement of pedestrian walkways, parking and arrival plazas. Social opportunities for employees occur at a multi-level paved terrace for outdoor dining and gathering that spills onto a sunken garden room. The garden is structured by a central water channel, circular reflection pool and symmetrical parterre of landscape beds while individual plantings and the arrangement of canopy trees create an interplay between ordered geometry and informality.
